Please drive HOW through our village?!

There seem to be two schools of thought:

Please drive carefully through our village
Please drive slowly through our village

Umm...
Isn't only one of those necessarily safe?

Please drive slowly, but without care or attention, through our village

But if it's slow it must be safe. Why else would we be cutting speed limits willy nilly?

In a few years time the signs will read..."Don't drive through our Village!"

Clearly, with a (rather large) plate underneath saying:

"But don't go asking for a bypass either, you'll mess up our lovely countryside and nobody will go to our village shop that we don't use ourselves."

In my observation (which I appreciate is inconsistent with the Carrington example) "please drive carefully" tends to be used when the limit is 30, and "please drive slowly" when it isn't.

Thus IIRC there are villages on the A64 where the speed limit is NSL* and you are asked to "please drive slowly" - which for a road where other vehicles are likely to be doing 60ish has never struck me as being a particularly safe thing to suggest.

* Note to Fate: I am not tempting you.

How slow is slowly?

We probably all agree that 1mph is slow.

We probably agree that if 1mph is slow, 2mph is slow as well...

and you can see where this argument ends up going... if n is slow, then n+1 is slow as well...

Here's an example of a village in Cheshire - Hankelow - which as yet does not have a speed limit, although no doubt one is planned. The signs here say "KILL YOUR SPEED".

There used to be quite a number of such villages in Cheshire, often significant settlements, but most have now been given speed limits. One that quite a few might have encountered is Marton on the A34 between Congleton and Alderley Edge, which is a "Please drive carefully through the village".

AIUI "Please drive carefully" is the official DfT recommendation.

It would be tempting to change the signs to "Please drive fastly through our village"

The worst ones are in Derbyshire where virtually every welcome sign to the county says "Watch your speed" :@

"Please drive quickly through our village in your petroleum distillate fuelled horseless carraige, lest ye be burnt at the stake, visitor from the future!" :D

Noticed a few "Haste ye back!"s on the A77 SCO, and around the Ards area too (no doubt receiving an Ulster Scots grant)

One I've always wondered about - at the entrance to a lot of villages, you get 'Please Drive Carefully through our village' - followed on exiting the village with 'Thank you for driving carefully through our village' - indicating that you can now drive carelessly. Well, Devon County Council have come up with something new on the A377 - "Please Continue to drive carefully".

I like that, it's a nice touch.

I've had limited experience of driving in Carrington:
Driving along streets that could be anywhere and then driving along this quite strange road to get back onto the motorway.

Please drive carefully through our village.
Never mind those heathens at Buford Abbey but drive carefully through OUR village.

I like the red "watch your speed" signs deployed by Wandsworth Borough Council on lampposts throughout their borough, seemingly at random. (Virtually all of Wandsworth is a 20 or 30 limit so they can go more or less anywhere.) For some reason they are hinged, which makes me wonder if they sometimes fold them up out of sight at times when driving too fast for the conditions is acceptable.

Yes, I'm watching my speed, and it's much too fast. Would you like me to do something about it or just keep a closer watch over how much I'm breaking the limit?

"Slow" to most people is anyone going >1 mph slower than they want to go. An "idiot" is anyone wishing to go >1 mph faster than they want to go. So the ideal speed is very narrowly confined to +/- 1mph :D

"No, Officer, I didn't see it. I was too busy following your signs and watching my speed."
"Do you know how fast you were going?"
"Exactly 20mph throughout"

"Observe speed limit" is even more retarded. What's wrong with using the word "obey" when that's what you mean.
